North West Disabilities Services (NWDS) Inc is a well-respected, long term provider of services to those with disability, with operations spanning the burgeoning growth areas of Sydney’s North-West suburbs.
Established in 1982, the NWDS leadership team recognised the value of implementing systems and procedures that enables the team to continuously be more productive, efficient and well informed.
These systems will most importantly allow the workforce to provide the best services to disadvantaged persons, espousing their motto of “Turning Dreams into Reality.”
On the first meeting with Ian Abrahams, Principal Risk Manager of CorProfit, Deborah Gersbach, CEO of NWDS shared how the organisation approached risk management over the years. She in turn received valuable inputs from CorProfit on the process around the management of risk and the range of programs that can be done to make it better.
“We have many participants requiring high care and this brings risk management very much on the front of mind for us. CorProfit pointed out that while we are managing risk, it is still fragmented and could be done better. I realised then that it is not enough to just manage risk, that we need to manage it more optimally and to constantly enhance our systems to ensure the best outcomes internally and externally” said Deborah Gersbach.
The NWDS board sanctioned some risk programs that requires improvement, with the vision of creating an alignment between these programs.
The first program was Incident Reporting, CorProfit’s approach was to start with exactly what we had and propose some IP that CorProfit has. This greatly improves the value of reporting, providing a feedback loop to learn from, based on the richness of the data that we were building but yet to analyse from a top down approach.
Our staff were receptive to CorProfit’s approach and was quick to adapt to the changes. It wasn’t about systems per say, but rather an education into how to leverage risk management to further improve processes.
The success of the Incidents Reporting led to tackling Feedback, Concerns and Complaints (another risk program) which has had a similar outcome.
NWDS looks forward to working with CorProfit over the next year to continue to enhance NWDS’s approach to enterprise risk. NWDS can now attest to the benefits such as a more efficient, more accurate “back office” operations to support front-line staff who coordinate and manage the activities that our participants find enjoyable and fulfilling.
“The small improvements introduced by CorProfit to improve the approach NWDS uses to document things like feedback has made a big difference in the quality of the information, I couldn’t be more pleased, it has made life so much easier!” says Purnima Vijay. Purnima provides administration services in relation to how NWDS captures, reports and closes Feedback, Concerns and Complaints
Danielle Zarb provides administration services in relation to how NWDS registers incidents and follow ups. This includes dealing with the range of incidents that occur and the processes to respond to keep the incidents as low as possible, all while maintaining a monthly report.
“When the NWDS WHS Officer went on maternity leave, I was thrown in the deep end to support the registering of incidents and to maintain the monthly reports. The WHS Officer trained me in the CorProfit approach and when Ian later visited, he asked me how I found it and I said that it was straightforward and user-friendly. CorProfit has also been very responsive and helpful in further coaching that I needed.
CEO Deborah Gersbach says, “It’s great to see someone like CorProfit add value and be most reasonable in how it seeks compensation, seeing that we are a charitable, not-for-profit organisation”.
